How do I upload a DWG file?

Accepted Answer

The quickest way is to drag your DWG or RVT file from your computer and drop it anywhere on the dashboard. New Project opens with the file already attached and the project name filled in from the file name, so you only need to add the job details. You can also click New Project and choose the file there, or open an existing project and use Add a drawing in the Files column. If you drop something that is not a DWG or RVT file, AutoMEP tells you rather than starting a project. You can also drop several drawings at once, a zip or a whole folder: New Project starts with the main drawing (you can pick which one) and adds the others to the project, so any linked drawings are found by name. AutoMEP accepts any AutoCAD DWG version from 2007 onward. The file is securely stored and processed in the cloud. That's Expert mode. In Guided mode the dashboard is a chat: drop your file in the box in the middle of the page and the AutoMEP Agent asks a few questions about the project before setting it up for you. To add a drawing to a project that already exists, open the project and pick Add a drawing in the drawing menu of the request box, or drop the file anywhere on the page.

How do I organize my projects on the dashboard?

Your dashboard has a few ways to keep a long list of projects under control. Click the star on a project row and it stays at the top of the list and appears under Starred in the sidebar; click it again to take the star off. To group projects, create a folder with New folder in the sidebar, then drag a project row onto it or choose Move to folder from the row's menu. The search box at the top of the sidebar, and the one above the project list, find a project by its name or by anything said in its chat: type lights and you get every project where you asked for lights or our reply mentioned them, with the matching line shown under the name. The status boxes above the list show how many projects are Running, Need your reply, Completed or Failed, and clicking one filters the list to just those, with a second click showing everything again. Each row also says what the project holds, a DWG, a Revit model or both, so you can tell them apart at a glance. Guided mode has the same folders and stars: its project list shows Starred, then your folders, then every project, most recently active first. Open a project's menu there to star it, move it to a folder or delete it, use the folder button next to Folders to make a new one, or drag a project onto a folder. Stars and folders are shared between the modes, so whatever you set in one shows in the other.

Question 3

Why is my job stuck at "Processing"?

Accepted Answer

Processing time depends on the size of the drawing and how much you asked for, so there is no fixed time. If a job stalls, AutoMEP detects it and either recovers it or marks it as failed and returns the usage to your account. The page updates by itself, and you can also refresh it.

Question 4

What does "Needs Clarification" mean?

Accepted Answer

AutoMEP asked a follow-up question because it could not make a sensible attempt at your request without one. For example, your request refers to something the drawing does not contain, like an existing duct that is not there, or gives coordinates that fall outside the drawing. When a detail is only missing, such as an airflow, AutoMEP picks a reasonable value, does the work, and tells you what it assumed. Answer the question in the chat panel and AutoMEP will proceed. If no response is provided within 48 hours, the job will expire and one job of usage is counted for the analysis work AutoMEP completed.

What types of edits can AutoMEP make?

AutoMEP supports a full range of professional MEP operations: adding supply and return ductwork, inserting equipment blocks (VAV boxes, air handlers, diffusers, fixtures), creating hatch areas for mechanical rooms, adding equipment tags with leader annotations (VAV-1 @ 800 CFM), adding aligned dimensions, routing electrical conduit and piping, and more. All geometry is placed on AIA/NCS standard layers automatically, or on your own CAD standard's layers when your project uses one. Additional operations include adding circles (round duct cross-sections), arcs (pipe elbows), ellipses (oval duct cross-sections), angular dimensions, radial dimensions, ordinate dimensions, section markers, pipe slope annotations, Bill of Materials tables, and 2D isometric projections.

Can AutoMEP insert blocks from my drawing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AutoMEP can insert any block that already exists in your DWG file's block table. Reference the block by name in your request (for example, "insert the DIFFUSER-24x24 block near the Exercise Room") and AutoMEP will place it at the correct location with proper scale and rotation.

Can AutoMEP route ductwork to specific rooms?

Yes. AutoMEP reads all text labels in your drawing, including room names, space numbers, and equipment tags. When you say "route supply duct from the AHU to the Conference Room," AutoMEP finds the Conference Room label's coordinates in the drawing and routes to it accurately.

How does usage work?

Accepted Answer

Every job you submit draws on your monthly allowance, which resets on your billing date. Jobs are not all the same size: a Revit job does more work than an AutoCAD one and draws more, and a request that turns into a very large set of operations draws more again. A request you send to several drawings at once is one job per drawing, and each draws on your allowance like a separate request. Your project page always shows where you stand before you submit, and the small ring next to your plan name at the bottom of the sidebar fills as you use this month's allowance. Hover it to see the percentage used, or open Settings for the same percentage as a bar. If a job fails, the usage is returned to your account automatically, and a job that finishes without changing anything is not counted either.

Question 9

What happens if my job fails?

Accepted Answer

Usage is returned on most failed jobs, including AI timeouts, drawing errors, and system failures, and on a job that finishes without changing anything. The exception is a job that expires in Needs Clarification: if AutoMEP asks a follow-up question and hears nothing back within 48 hours of asking, the analysis work already done is counted. AutoMEP asks at most twice, and if it has asked twice and still cannot proceed, the usage is returned to you. You get an email either way.

Question 10

How do I delete my account?

Accepted Answer

You can delete your account yourself. Go to Settings, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Delete account. AutoMEP explains what goes: your account and everything in it, meaning your drawings and the files made from them, your projects and job history, your uploaded families and your sign-in. Type DELETE to confirm and you are signed out straight away. If you have a paid plan, the subscription is canceled as part of the same step, so you are not billed again. Deleting cannot be undone, so download anything you want to keep first. If you only want to stop paying, cancel your subscription from Manage Billing in Settings instead and your account stays as it is.

Question 11

Is my drawing secure? Do you have SOC 2 or a DPA?

Accepted Answer

Only your account can open your projects, downloads from active storage use private links that expire, and drawings in active storage are encrypted at rest. We don't use your drawings to train AI models. The Security page at automep.app/security covers encryption, sign-in, payments, backups and how we handle incidents. We don't hold a SOC 2 report or an ISO 27001 certificate today. For a vendor review we have a published subprocessor list on the Terms page, a listing in the Cloud Security Alliance STAR Registry with our completed CAIQ self-assessment, and an accessibility conformance report. If your firm has its own security questionnaire or needs a Data Processing Addendum, ask through the Help Center form.

Question 12

What happens when I reach my limit?

Accepted Answer

When you reach your monthly allowance you can either upgrade your plan or turn on extra jobs, the setting called "Extra jobs" in Settings. With it on, jobs keep running past your allowance and the extra usage is billed on your next invoice, so a bigger job uses more. Extra jobs have a monthly cap, so the bill can never run away from you, and once you hit the cap jobs pause until your allowance resets. Extra jobs are off by default, available on a paid plan, and can be switched on or off at any time. Jobs already running are never interrupted. To change plans, open Manage Billing in Settings. An upgrade starts right away and adds the difference between the two plans' monthly usage to what you have left, so nothing you haven't used is lost. A downgrade starts at your next renewal, and you keep your current plan and its usage until then.

Question 13

Sign in says the method is unavailable, or will not stay signed in.

Accepted Answer

This is almost always your browser refusing to store anything for automep.app rather than a problem with AutoMEP. Signing in needs to keep a small amount of data for the site, so if cookies and site data are blocked for automep.app, Google and Microsoft sign-in both stop before they start and an email sign-in will not stay signed in. Open your browser's site settings for automep.app and allow cookies and site data, then try again. Two quick ways to confirm it: open automep.app in a guest or private window, where the default settings usually apply, or check the small icon at the left of the address bar, which is where browsers show what is blocked for the site you are on. Browser extensions that block trackers can do the same thing, so if you use one, allow automep.app in it. If sign-in still fails after that, use the form on this page and tell us which browser you are on.

Question 14

My download is not working.

Accepted Answer

Try right-clicking the Download DWG button and selecting "Save link as." If the problem persists, try a different browser. DWG download links expire after 1 year.

Question 15

AutoMEP edited the wrong part of my drawing.

Accepted Answer

This can happen if room labels are ambiguous (two rooms with similar names) or if the DWG has no readable text labels near the target area. Add clearer room labels to your DWG and resubmit, or specify exact coordinates in your request.

Question 16

Can I chain multiple edits together?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on the Pro and Team plans. After a job completes, "Build on the last result" above the request box is ticked for you, so your next request edits the drawing that job produced. Untick it to start again from your original upload. You can chain as many edits as you need. On a trial or the Starter plan, every request starts from your original upload, so ask for everything you want in one request, or repeat the earlier change alongside the new one.

Can one request change several drawings at once?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for drawings in the same project. Below the request box, open Also run on other drawings and tick the ones you want. Each drawing runs as its own job and uses usage the same way a separate request would. Its result appears in that drawing's own thread, so select it in the Files column to see it (in Guided mode, pick it from the drawing menu in the request box), and with Email when done on you get an email for each one. If one of the drawings can't run, for example because it's still uploading or your plan doesn't have enough usage left for all of them, nothing is submitted and AutoMEP tells you which drawing stopped it. On the Pro and Team plans, with Build on the last result ticked, each drawing builds on its own last result. Each drawing is planned on its own, so write a request that makes sense on every one of them, such as adding supply ducts to every room on the floor. AutoMEP doesn't yet line up work between levels, like a riser that has to land in the same spot on two floors, so check those connections yourself. Guided mode has the same Also run on other drawings list under its request box, and it works the same way.

Question 18

Part of my drawing is missing, or "Xref" text is printed across my sheet.

Accepted Answer

Your drawing links to other drawings (xrefs), such as a floor plan or a title block kept in its own file, and those files are not in your project yet. Until they are, anything drawn in them is missing, and AutoCAD prints a placeholder with the linked file's path where it belongs. The drawing card on your project page lists the missing ones by name. Add them to the same project and AutoMEP uses them from then on: drop them on the drawing card, or drop a zip or a whole folder and only the files your drawing uses are kept. They show in the viewer, in your results and in the PDF, and the drawing you get back still links to them the way it did before, so it opens in AutoCAD as you expect. If you send a request while one is still missing, AutoMEP asks first and takes no usage. Choose Run without them if you left it out on purpose, and AutoMEP won't ask again about that file for this drawing. Adding drawings to an existing project is done in Expert mode, so switch to Expert to add them.

Question 19

Can I upload my linked drawings (xrefs) as separate files?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Put them in the same project as the drawing that links to them, as loose files, a zip such as an eTransmit package, or a whole folder. AutoMEP matches them by file name and ignores capital letters, spaces, underscores and hyphens. If a file was renamed, for example S-GRID-v2.dwg for a link to S-GRID.dwg, AutoMEP asks once whether it's the right one. One linked file serves every drawing in the project that uses it. If you upload a newer copy with the same name, the newest one is used from then on, and the older copy is marked in the Files list. AutoMEP only reads your linked drawings: it edits the drawing you asked about, never the files it links to. You don't need to bind anything first.

Question 20

My drawing was refused as too large.

Accepted Answer

AutoMEP reads the whole drawing when it plans, so a very large file can exceed what it can hold in one pass. Recent work cut that payload down considerably and many drawings that used to be refused now run, so if you hit this a while ago it is worth trying again. If it still happens, splitting the file helps and rewording the request does not: one floor or one area per file is the split that works, because the whole drawing is read either way. Your usage is returned whenever a job is refused for size.

Question 21

My project page says AutoCAD can't open my drawing.

Accepted Answer

When AutoMEP opened this file, it stopped with a read error. That usually means part of the drawing is damaged, and it can happen even when the file opens on your own computer. Jobs on that drawing are refused before they start, so trying one doesn't use any of your plan. To repair it, open AutoCAD, type RECOVER and choose the file. Once it opens, type AUDIT and answer Yes when it asks whether to fix errors. Save the drawing, then upload the saved copy to your project and run your request on the new upload. If the repaired copy is still refused, use the form on this page and we'll take a look.

Question 22

What file types does AutoMEP support?

Accepted Answer

AutoMEP supports AutoCAD DWG files (.dwg) version 2007 and later, and Revit files (.rvt) for Revit 2024, Revit 2026 and Revit 2027. For Revit files, AutoMEP applies HVAC, plumbing, and electrical operations directly to the Revit model and returns a modified .rvt, an exported DWG and a plotted PDF. AutoMEP can no longer run Revit 2025, so a 2025 model is offered a one-time upgrade to Revit 2026, which only happens if you agree to it. DXF and MicroStation DGN files aren't supported today. If you work in MicroStation, save the drawing as a DWG (use Save As and choose the DWG file type) and upload that. If you need DXF or DGN, tell us through the form on this page, because what people ask for is how we decide what to build next.

Question 23

Can AutoMEP create shop drawings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. When you request shop drawings or working drawings, AutoMEP automatically completes every achievable part: AIA/NCS discipline layers (or your own CAD standard's), pipe and duct annotations, equipment tags, leader annotations, dimensions, and schematic riser diagrams on layout tabs. If any requested features (such as isometric 3D views or automatic invert level calculations from geometry) are not yet supported, AutoMEP sets the job to Partial Completion status and explains exactly what was done and what was skipped in the review notes.

Can AutoMEP generate riser diagrams?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AutoMEP creates schematic riser diagrams on a new layout tab. It draws vertical riser lines for each pipe, horizontal floor level lines using elevation data extracted from your drawing, pipe size labels, and flow direction indicators. Request a riser diagram by system, for example: 'Create a riser diagram for the cold water system.'

Can AutoMEP create isometric views?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AutoMEP draws a 2D isometric projection of pipes and runs already in your drawing and puts it on a new layout tab. It's a flat 2D drawing, so it prints like the rest of your sheets. Ask by layer or by what the lines are, for example: 'Create an isometric projection of the sanitary drain lines.'

Can AutoMEP generate a Bill of Materials or material schedule?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on AutoCAD drawings. Ask for it in plain words, for example "add a bill of materials table to the right of the plan for the electrical layers". AutoMEP counts the devices it has drawn, such as lights, switches, receptacles and panels, along with the blocks already in your drawing, and adds up the length of runs like circuits, ducts and pipes on each layer, in your drawing's own units. The table goes into the drawing, and the same rows come as a CSV file you can open in Excel from Download BOM. You can limit it to certain layers or disciplines. It counts what is drawn, so it doesn't price items or match your own BOQ codes. On a trial or the Starter plan, ask for the drawing work and the BOM in the same request so the new devices are counted. For a Revit model, ask a question instead, such as "how many light fixtures are on level 1, by type".

Question 27

What is paper space and how does AutoMEP use it?

Accepted Answer

Paper space (also called layout tabs) is where drawing sheets, title blocks and viewports live in AutoCAD. AutoMEP can put new work on a sheet instead of in the model: name the layout, for example 'add the general notes to the E-101 layout', or say 'on the sheet' to use the first one. That keeps border lines and sheet notes on the sheet, apart from the model geometry, and new sheets can carry your own title block.
